| Brief Histories:
The Grand Manan Tourism Association began in 1978 as an offshoot of the Grand Manan Board of Trade. Our members are engaged in tourist activities ranging from accommodations to tours to restaurants. As a member of the GMTA you can advertise in our publications distributed on the island and off, be included on our web page, have advertising space on both ferries and the Black's Harbour sign board, attend meetings, and become a member of the Grand Manan Chamber of Commerce. Membership is only $130. Please inquire about advertising costs. An active part of the Grand Manan community we annually produce a free map/business handout to island visitors, and a colour brochure for distribution in Visitor Information Centres off island. We also publish a book:
A Trails Committee works hard each year to make our trails presentable, sometimes receiving extra funding, but mostly through volunteer labour. The Committee is the prime caretakers of the Island's trails, excluding the Anchorage Provincial Park and Hole-in-the-Wall Park trail systems. You can become a Friend of Grand Manan Trails and receive an annual newsletter, adopt a trail or portion thereof, or buy a crest to help fund the continual maintenance of our trails. Heritage Trails and Footpaths of Grand Manan, 2005 edition, Robert Stone, editor, is published by the Trails Committee. We have a representative on the Grand Manan Transportation Committee and have a number of additional committees to deal with specific issues. Funding is from memberships, donations, advertising, sign space rental, and sale of publications. We are a member of the TINA The Grand Manan Chamber of Commerce began as the Grand Manan Board of Trade in 1944. The main thrust for the formation of the Board of Trade was a new ferry for the island. In 1945 the HMS Elk, renamed the Grand Manan III was put into service. However, this ferry was in some ways a step backward, not having drive-on drive-off capability, the cars had to be winched aboard. It wasn't until 1965 that full drive-on drive-off ferry service was restored to the island. Our members are from the community interested in the business and day-to-day activities of the island. As a member you are entitled to the Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan, attend monthly meetings, be included in our web page, and be a member of the Grand Manan Tourism Association. Membership is $130 annually for businesses and $10 annually for individuals. We frequently sponsor special meetings such as the closure of the Gannet Rock Light House, and rock weed harvesting. We have a representative on the Grand Manan Transportation Committee, and the Charlotte County Business Development Corporation. Funding is from memberships, donations, and the Chamber Group Insurance Plan. In 1996, the Grand Manan Tourism Association and Chamber of Commerce joined forces for a stronger voice in the Grand Manan economy. "Service Above Self" The Grand Manan Rotary Club began in 1979, sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Stephen-Milltown. It was officially chartered on April 12, 1980. It is part of District 7810, which includes New Brunswick, Bonaventure County, Quebec, Aroostock and Washington Counties in Maine. It is the only active service club on Grand Manan. We currently have 24 members. Since the beginning, the Club has been a primary initiator of many community service projects, as well as providing ongoing support for both District and Rotary International programs. For our Young People:
Funding The Club funds its many commitments through an
annual auction, fund raising events at the Rotary Festival, community barbecues,
donations & bequests, plus special raffles and financial drives for
specific projects. |
